Profile Information

My favorite musicians:
Too many to list really... Mravinsky, Temirkanov, Bernstein, Svetlanov, Gergiev, Bashmet, Spivakov, Vladimir Ashkenazi, Maazel, MTT, Sofronitsky, Neigauz, Alexandr Slobodjanik, Friedrich Gulda, Martha Argerich, Bella Davidovich, Gilels, Richter, Pletnev, Yakov Kasman, Arcadi Volodos and many others
My favorite composers:
too many to list, I am afraid
The instrument(s) I play (or played, as a kid):
piano
My favorite concert of all time:
Too many to list, but several come to mind right away:
Since my childhood I still remember the most refined touch of Bella Davidovich, who came to perform to our little seaside resort city during low winter season. That is why, we were able to get seats right next to the stage in our imperial time main city theater, so I still remember all the intimate details of her hands and finger movements, face expression, even her occaisional breaths during her pauses... Unforgettable magical performance of Mozart, indeed...

Another more recent one is Solo Recital of Arcadi Volodos in Oct. 1998 at Hertz Hall in Berkeley (actually, all of his other live performances as well), on a closed lid piano and in a dark hall (for an obvious reason, but did not matter for the performance's result anyway...), just days before his Carnegie Hall Debut... Jaw dropping technique as well as astonishing expression finesse and nuances in the art of "singing" on the percussive instrument of piano, in addition to genuine originality, making what was considered "impossible" so easily possible...
What I’d like people on this social network to know about me:
I'd love to meet other people who share the passion for music, including the joy of live performances.
How I’m connected with the San Francisco Symphony:
as a fan, go to concerts, volunteer for the Symphony, other (explain below)
Other
Today, particularly in CA USA the advocacy for music and music education is essential. No musician can afford to hope that someone else will communicate the values about his art to those who are yet to discover it. That is why the efforts of MTT in leading SFS's educational projects are simply exemplary. Bravo Maestro!

Let’s Count in All “First-Rate Russians” at SF Symphony on Sunday Nov.8, 2009

I sincerely admire Heuwell Tircuit for making his effort to delve into the coverage of this outstanding concert of All-Russian music at the San Francisco Symphony in his recent review "First-Rate Russian at S.F. Symphony". And, I am certainly sympathetic to the reasons why it can be at times so overwhelming for some western listeners (including the reviewer himself, according to his own admission) – after all, the vast and unique legacy of Russian music is still not taught even to the mus… Continue

STANDING OVATION FOR PIONEERING IN MUSIC EDUCATION ADVOCACY

In his recent article, Michael Tilson Thomas (affectionately called by his local fans “MTT”), San Francisco Symphony’s Artistic Director and Conductor remarks: “Speaking at the Pittsburgh Creative & Performing Arts School, Michelle Obama gave an 11-minute address about the importance of the arts in our schools. I appreciated her expressing the conviction that the arts aren’t somehow an “extra” part of our nation’s life, but should be an essential part of it.”

I wholeheartedly agree with Mae… Continue
