Welcome to the Smule Group on the San Francisco Symphony Social Network. It’s a good place to hang out and meet other budding musicians who use Smule apps to turn their iPhones and iPod touches into musical instruments.

Dear Mr. Ward, Why in the world would you want to play a French horn when you speak English and English horns exist? ;-)

Hi Patty - I noticed you listed English horn as one of your instruments. A new group for horn players has just formed on the San Francisco Symphony social network – hope you’ll check it out and join the conversation! Here’s the link: http://community.sfsymphony.org/group/hornplayers

Right ... and then I'll tell you which of my children I like the best.
My favorite composers:
See above.
The instrument(s) I play (or played, as a kid):
oboe, English horn
My favorite concert of all time:
Oh my ... so many wonderful concerts, such an OldBoeBrain. How can I decide? How can I remember them all and choose?

But I do recall Nathan Milstein's encore (one of the Bach unaccompanied sonata movements) when he played with San José Symphony. And another time Stoltzman walking out to play the Stravinsky Three Pieces for clarinet when the power went out at the CPA and the orchestra couldn't play until the emergency stand lights were set up.
What I’d like people on this social network to know about me:
I blog at oboeinsight.com.

I've been playing professionally since 1975, but I've only recently had the time and (almost) money to go out with my husband to enjoy San Francisco Symphony concerts as well as San Francisco Opera performances. It's an absolute delight! (Raising three children and living on a musician's income didn't allow for that enjoyment until now.)
How I’m connected with the San Francisco Symphony:

Well gee, I did audition on EH eons ago ... there's that. ;-)

(And no, I'm not bitter; I didn't deserve to win. I can be honest about that one, no prob.)
