Profile Information

My favorite musicians:
Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen are like my two big brothers - I've known them a long time, I love them very much, and it's tough to find fault with them. Maria Callas destroys me. Joshua Bell, I gotta say. And the Beatles, because nobody ever had more fun making music.
My favorite composers:
I guess I'd say the old warhorses, but am constantly learning about new ones (new to me, anyway) and loving the process. I heard the SF Symphony perform a Claude Vivier piece once and it was unforgettable. I like pretty much everything I've heard by Sibelius, of all people. Which *don't* I like? It's like trying to decide which benevolent goddess (or god) you dislike.
The instrument(s) I play (or played, as a kid):
piano, guitar
My favorite concert of all time:
Annual Springsteen birthday command performances.
What I’d like people on this social network to know about me:
It's more what I'd like people to know about the SF Symphony staff: it's an incredible bunch of musically talented and very smart people. And yes, I'm biased.
How I’m connected with the San Francisco Symphony:
as a fan, go to concerts, work for the Symphony

On the Road Again

"On the road" - "on tour"- it sounds so romantic. Had I truly forgotten the rigors of the road with the bands I'd been on tour with? Days with little or no sleep, endless highway miles, all those road songs...

The logistical marvel that is an orchestra tour is something to behold. One hundred-plus musicians, road crew, staff, agents, managers, equipment and instrument trunks, all hurtling toward the same destination, the same goal: an incredible night of musicmaking for audiences around… Continue

The Grammy folks (that's the Recording Academy) showed up at Davies Symphony Hall tonight to formally present Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas, the SF Symphony and the SF Symphony Chorus with their three Grammy Awards for the recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 8 and the Adagio from Symphony No. 10. The SF Girls Chorus and Pacific Boychoir also perform on the recording, and attended the ceremony. Rave reviews for Symphony's tour program performances: Kissine premiere, Tetzlaff in Tchaikovsky

The reviews are in, and the response to the SF Symphony's performances in Davies Symphony Hall last week is overwhelmingly enthusiastic, particularly for the premiere of Victor Kissine's "Post-scriptum" and Christian Tetzlaff's performances of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. The Orchestra is gearing up to take these works on a five-city U.S. tour March 18-26. Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas and the Orchestra perform in Champaign-Urbana, IL 3/18: Ann Arbor 3/19 & 20, Philadelphia 3/23, Wa… Continue

Hey Jean!

Help me upload a new photo quick! I'm a technologically befuddled bassoonist after all...

Hi Jean!

Thanks again for your hospitality on Wednesday, the Gala was so awesome!!! Definitely the most fun I've had in a long time.

The photos that you put up look great, it's really nice to see them all up on the community page. I'll post some of my own up when I get the time.

It was great meeting you and I can't wait for the rest of the SFS season! Hopefully I'll see you around at a future concert! If I do, I'll make sure to say hi!

Hi!
I will be playing the Mendelssohn violin concerto. I'm pretty sure that they won't tell me play the whole entire movement. That'll be pretty long though. Hah!

Hello Jean, thanks for the suggestion...

Speaking of the collection... I would start with my first classic music CD at age 12... (God! long time ago..). It was "Ombra Mai Fu/Pachelbel: Canon performed by I Solisti Italiani. I was attracted by the beautiful sound that I felt I was in Europe. Being in Europe to me at that time was a dream ( I was in Taiwan then). This was how I first "met" classic music.

As time goes by, my college life in Cleveland, Ohio, I was beneficial with a student ticket discount ($10/ticket) for tones of concerts. That's how I knew Cleveland Orchestra.

Among the violinists, Midori is the one I still like most. Mendelssohn & Bruch violin concertos by Midori & Berliner Philiparmoniker is my favor.

A treasure of favorite violin encores/ Jaime Laredo: Violin & Margo Garrett: Piano is also a "violin 101" that I would suggest.
