Hello, Andrea, and welcome! I really enjoyed reading what you've written in your profile. I hope you find this a worthwhile site to visit and connect with other music fans and concertgoers! Again, welcome.

Profile Information

My favorite musicians:
I am a great admirer of Esa-Pekka Salonen, he did an amazing job in LA, and I think all symphonic institutions should get inspired by that experience to make changes and rejuvenate their activities. Other conductors I admire: Mariss Jansons, Claudio Abbado, Paavo and Neeme Järvi, Osmo Vänskä. MTT is particularly brilliant in American, French and Russian music, yet recently I sometimes find him somewhat more heavy-handed than in the past. Herbert Blomstedt is still a fantastic conductor, and I really appreciate how James Gaffigan has already grown into a fine and expert musician.
Among soloists, I am a huge fan of Hilary Hahn and Julia Fischer, among violinists, and Helene Grimaud and Yefim Bronfman, among pianists.
Best orchestra in the world? I vote for the Concertgebouw Amsterdam
My favorite composers:
Mostly 20th century symphonic composers, up to contemporary ones. At the top of the list, Mahler, Richard Strauss, Vaughan Williams, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Bartok, Janacek, Debussy, Ravel, Messiaen. Among contemporaries, John Adams, Magnus Lindberg, Kaija Saariaho.
Of course, I do not overlook less "modern" composers, and I get great pleasure from excellent performances of symphonies or concertos by Brahms or Beethoven or Dvorak.
Mozart, Bach, Vivaldi, not so much...
The instrument(s) I play (or played, as a kid):
As a kid I tried violin for 2 years, I can strike some keys on a piano, and I bought a used clarinet but never really taken it out of the case... All in all, NOT a musician!
My favorite concert of all time:
So many great ones. Our own MTT and SFS at Carnegie Hall in Berlioz and Ives, or Bernstein and Shostakovich. "Gurrelieder" conducted by Salonen at Disney Hall in LA, or by Rattle in Philadelphia. Gustavo Dudamel and the amazing Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra, two years ago at Davies SH. But the truly greatest one was in 2001 at the Berlin Philharmonie, with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra conducted by Boulez in a 3-hour monster concert going from Stravinsky and Berg to Scriabin and Webern, concluding with Varese's apocalyptic "Ameriques", all enjoyed from the third orchestra row: I'm still shaking...
What I’d like people on this social network to know about me:
Attending concerts has been my passion since high school, when often I would go on my own to Venice to see the local orchestra perform. As a PhD student in Geneva, I enjoyed their incredible deals for students (5-6$ per ticket!) and enjoyed concerts almost on a weekly basis. The same here, after arriving in the Bay Area 7 years ago! I am also very interested in cinema, outdoor activities, and socializing in general, all favorite aspects of the SF life!
How I’m connected with the San Francisco Symphony:
as a fan, go to concerts
