Hi Barnaby - the last couple of times I've been to Paul K at Gough and Oak it hasn't been crowded, and the food's quite good. I'd still recommend making a reservation. It might be considered by some to be just outside walking distance, but it's really just a few blocks away from Davies Hall/SF Opera House.

Hi there - try Absinthe or Hays Street Grill or Caffe delle Stelle - all withing one block of the Hall. :)

Hi all - I just found this post on Chowhound - it's got some very recent responses to an inquiry about affordable good places to eat in the Civic Center neighborhood. Many of the suggestions are north and east of the Asian Art Museum, but not all that far away.

Two suggestions: On the expensive side is Jardiniere, very professional wait staff well equipped to get you in and out in time for any reasonable curtain. On the less expensive and formal side, Max's a couple of blocks north on Van Ness at Opera Plaza.

Barnaby,
I've totally been in the same boat with the Ananda Fuara Wednesday night conundrum. If you like casual, inexpensive fare, a good cocktail and don't mind a 15 minute constitutional (read: walk) before the concert, my best recommendation is to enjoy the happy hour at Olive, deep in the Tenderloin on Larkin near O'Farrell. Barnaby - our standby before the Symphony is the California Pizza Kitchen on Redwood Alley - off Van Ness near the corner of McAllister/Van Ness. Fresh, delicious, inexpensive and close to Davies. The only drawback is - no reservations. Get there early! More info here:

Glad you asked this question, as we're looking for options, too for November. My family and I have dined at Jardiniere, and memorably AFTER the premiere of Dr Atomic; we were able to be served, conveniently with a later evening menu. Might be too destination for pre concert, which we've also done with reservations. Appreciating these other suggestions.

Flippers---great burgers, sandwiches or salads---close in Hayes Valley and they are pretty fast!
